COACHING
- "To accomplish
great things, we must not only act but also dream, not only plan
but also believe."-Anatole France
I have been offering personal coaching services
(aka "life coaching", or "executive coaching")
since July, 2006. I have successfully coached
librarians who have moved on to more fulfilling positions in
their careers, and have received recognitions including LJ
Mover Shaker and ALA Emerging Leader.
I have been coached and mentored by one of the best; Sandy
Newman, a former President of the NJ Professional Coaches
Association.
SO WHAT IS COACHING?
Coaching is an equal relationship between two people
directed towards fulfilling the goals and needs of the
client. In a coaching relationship, you set the agenda
and the coach assumes at all times that you are creative,
resourceful, and whole.
Through deep listening and provocative questions, the
coach helps you articulate your dreams and desires, gain
clarity on your purpose and goals, become aware of the ways
in which you may be sabotaging or limiting yourself, and develop
strategies for moving forward. The coach then holds you
accountable for the actions you choose to move you in the
direction of your desired outcomes.
Examples of
provocative questioning:
- If I reviewed your calendar and tracked how you spent your
time what conclusions would I draw about what matters to you?
- What's the gap between your stated priorities and your
reality?
- How are you making this world a better place? What "Big
Thing" motivates you
- What are some things you can do to move in
the direction you want to go?
- What will you do differently?
In short, coaching helps you figure out what you want and
helps you develop a plan to get it.
